You know what you want from your top candidates…But what do they want from you? If you’re asked to describe the exact set of talents, skills, credentials and personal traits you’re looking for, you can answer without hesitation. But the reverse isn’t quite as clear. If you’re lucky enough to cross paths with a candidate who fits this model, how can you attract her attention and encourage her to apply? And more important, how can you convince her to accept your offer when you’re ready to extend one? Here are a few of the employer qualities that tend to attract the highest flying job seekers in the modern marketplace. Appealing employers tend to:

Respect their employee’s time.

Modern job seekers need to be paid for their work, of course. But there are a few commodities they tend to value as much as—or even more than—money. And one of these is time. Today’s workers are pulled in multiple directions by multiple competing priorities, and wise employers respect these demands. Flexible scheduling and remote working arrangements can raise your profile in the marketplace.

Respect their candidate’s time as well.

You’ll attract higher quality employees if you expedite the selection process and don’t force your candidates to wait by the phone or come in for more than two rounds of interviews. Once you launch into the third round, you’ll start losing the talented pros who have other options, and only the desperate will remain in the pool.

Respect their employee’s sense of purpose.

We all want to feel as if our work is valuable and our efforts are part of a larger cause. In an earlier era, employees could be ordered to sort paper clips all day without ever being told how this task fits into a larger mission. As long as they were being paid, they didn’t need to be kept in the loop or made to feel like members of a team. But that’s no longer the case. If you ask your employees to complete repetitive or seemingly meaningless tasks, you’ll need to frame these tasks properly. Otherwise you may alienate these employees before they even decide to apply.

Make their candidates feel like family.

Your center-city office has no parking lot, but you really don’t care. How your employees get to work, where they park, and which train or bus they take are not your concern. If this describes your attitude, think twice. Your more successful competitors make sure their employees are comfortable and taken care of all day long…starting with their commute to the office. Lease a parking garage, offer transportation discounts, and at the very least, respect the daily challenges your employees face in order to support your bottom line.
