Are you finding it harder and harder to get out of bed when your alarm goes off? Before your eyes are even open, do you spend a few minutes every morning contemplating taking a “mental health” day? When it’s time to leave at the end of the day, do you race for the elevator? Do weekends feel like the only days of the week when you’re truly alive?

If so, you may be writing these feelings off as a normal aspect of working life. You have to admit that none of your coworkers seem to feel this way. But still, nobody ever promised you that every working day would be filled with engagement and passion. And you need to pay the bills.

This Is What a Career Slump Looks Like

Here’s some news: you’re trapped in a career-related rut. The feelings you’re experiencing may disappear on their own over time. But if you don’t feel like waiting around for this cloud of resignation and boredom to pass by itself, there are plenty of steps you can take to find your passion again and feel the way you once did about your office, your ambitions, and the hours and days of your working life.

1. Figure out when the change occurred. Think back to a time when you threw yourself into this job with aggressive energy. Remember how excited you were when you landed the interview and received your offer? That’s the passion you’re looking for. If you feel sure you can’t recover that feeling in this workplace, it may be time to start looking for a new job or a new career altogether.

2. Answer the following questions: Why do you love this work? What brought you to this field in the first place? Has the well of your motivation dried up? Or has your passion simply been overtaken by familiarity and routine? If the source of your motivation is gone, it’s time to move on from this place. If you’ve simply lost touch with it, look for possible ways to reconnect.

3. Is there something else you’d rather be doing instead? If you’re software developer, but you’d really rather be a restaurant chef, try to figure out what’s holding you back from pursuing your real ambitions. Then create a step by step plan to move yourself out of your current situation and into something better suited to your personality and your true goals.
