The technical needs of your open position will vary according to the circumstances, of course. Some candidates can’t even be considered if they lack a high degree of fluency and proven competence in skill areas that take years to master. And of course, these non-negotiable skill sets will vary by industry and position level. But despite a wide variance in specific demands, there are five core skill sets and personal traits that almost all employees need to demonstrate in order to find success in modern white collar positions. If your candidate can offer these qualities, feel free to move him or her forward through the process. But if these qualities are lacking, take a closer look.

1. An understanding of “professionalism”

Modern workplace environments vary from each office to the next; Some cultures appreciate a sense of humor, others have more straight-laced sensibilities. Some cultures encourage innovation and risk taking, and others expect employees to toe the line. But almost every workplace upholds a similar definition of professionalism, including respectful interaction, emotional control, pride in the larger enterprise, general integrity, and teamwork. Professionalism is an aesthetic that works its way into every detail of workplace presentation, from posture to punctuality to vocal register to clothing choices.

2. Autonomy

Modern workers need to understand the line between asking for guidance when they need it, and supporting the company according to their best judgment. Most employees should lean toward autonomy whenever possible. This is especially true in a modern digital workplace where a growing number of employees are working from remote locations with no direct managerial supervision.

3. Focus

Distractions are a modern obstacle that can separate the wheat from the chaff as far as productivity is concerned. In a world of constant media streams and perpetual connectivity, those who have the inner resources to control these distractions will thrive. Those who don’t will fail…until they learn how overcome this obstacle, filter information, and focus.

4. Sharing and Cooperation

On the surface, we live in a culture that claims to encourage competition and competitive behavior. But in actual practice, internal competition and infighting drive otherwise profitable companies out of business every day. And a mindlessly competitive attitude can alienate coworkers, clients, customers, direct reports, and supervisors alike. Hire employees who know how to work with others, share the load, and behave generously with information, support, and resources.

5. Flexibility

Modern employees need to be ready to accept change and navigate a constantly shifting market landscape. Watch out for those who tend to find a groove and settle in.
