If you’re taking the lazy approach to your sourcing process and you’re hoping the internet will do the job for you, think again. It’s true that online job boards can broadcast a position to a global audience, but every other aspect of the task is still in your own hands. You still need to create a compelling post that will attract the kinds of candidates you need, and you still need to encourage those candidates to self-select by providing information that’s accurate, not just appealing. Here are a few tips that can help you gain the attention of the applicants you’re looking for while keeping obvious non-contenders out of the running.

1. Define the job, not the candidate

You know the kind of candidate you need for this position. In fact, you can picture her in your mind down to the last credential. But instead of framing your job post as a laundry list of the person you’re looking for, simply describe the job. Explain the challenges and demands, briefly summarize the company business model, and explain how the person in this role will contribute to the enterprise. Then allow your readers to decide if this position seems like something they want.

2. Keep your basic pitch simple, clear, and short

Effective job sourcing, like an effective sales strategy, starts with a core pitch or value proposition. Summarize your most compelling argument in less than fifteen words. Then use this to headline your ad, or start a conversation with a prospective candidate on the phone.

3. Use creative copy, but a straightforward title

Your ad can use all kinds of clever wording designed to amuse or attract members of your target demographic, but keep the title of your post as clear as possible. Candidates don’t use search terms like “Advertising Wizard” when they look for available positions. Stick with “Advertising Copywriter” or “Account Coordinator”.

4. Use your existing employees

The best way to reach great candidates is by leveraging your social network, and in your case, your social network consists of your existing employee teams. Who understands your needs and your company culture better than the employees who already work here? Especially the ones who are happy enough to encourage their friends to apply? Offer hiring bonuses to employees who provide successful recommendations.
