When you walk into your workplace in the morning, the first few moves you make can have a lasting impact on the productivity and value of your day. But many employees don’t recognize that the last few minutes of the day are just as important when it comes to getting things done, reinforcing positive relationships with those around you, and finding meaning in your work. Here are a few simple evening moves that can help you get the most out of your efforts and allow you to hit the ground running when you show up the next morning.

1. Review your to-do list. Creating a list at the beginning of the day is a great idea, but you aren’t fully leveraging this list if you aren’t taking a last quick look over it before you leave. A few of your items may need to be shifted into the schedule for the following day, but take satisfaction in crossing off the rest.

2. Tidy up. It’s energizing and relaxing to step into a clean, organized workspace in the morning. So do yourself a favor and take care of this step now. Put loose papers in folders, clean out your coffee mug, and shelve notebooks and reference material.

3. Address non-essential emails. Don’t let them hang over your head.

4. Say goodbye. Make a habit of poking your head into the workspace of your boss and coworkers and establishing eye contact as you leave for the day. This should become a pleasant and regular ritual. Don’t just disappear; say goodbye, smile, and offer or receive verbal “thank-yous” as necessary.

5. Leave work at work. Create rituals that allow you to mentally and emotionally disconnect from this physical space until your return the following day. Something as simple as placing a paperweight on your unfinished work can help. This small gesture will allow you to play with your children or have dinner without feeling like you need to continue wrestling with work related drama.

6. Do what you can to make your commute as easy as possible. Don’t put yourself through the stress of standing in traffic with your gas gauge on E, missing your train and having to wait an hour for the next one, or having to choose a new route home every single day. A stressful commute can seriously undermine your relationship with your job, so protect yourself—and your work– and think ahead.
