You may not have the financial resources to buy your team’s loyalty. And you may not be in a position to offer them all the perks they deserve for their hard work and dedication. But that’s no reason to place a low priority on employee recognition, or to let their efforts, talents, and contributions go unrecognized. So until you’re on stronger financial footing, stop worrying about the big salary increases and bonuses you can’t offer right now, and start looking a little harder for alternatives. Try some of these low-cost moves.

1. Just pay closer attention. Every day, try to offer words of praise to at least five employees, and say thank you to at least twenty. Make sure each of your managers apply a similar rule. If you’re having a difficult time finding something to praise, or someone to thank, you aren’t looking hard enough.

2. Instead of money, offer gatherings. Sometimes the best alternative to a round of holiday bonuses is a bigger-than-usual holiday party. Pull out the stops on special occasions, and during the rest of the year, keep an eye out for anything worth celebrating. In the meantime, find a clean, welcoming local bar or restaurant and sponsor a weekly happy hour…Getting through the week should be cause enough to bring employees together for some socializing, sipping, and snacks on the company tab.

3. Offer time. These days, employees are often so busy and burdened by competing obligations that they actually value time more than money. Show your thanks to an especially hard working employee by giving her an unexpected day off. Send your team home early after a big victory. And offer summer hours if your business model allows.

4. Offer gifts. Little presents like vouchers for a spa or tickets to a theater performance or baseball game can help you show the appreciation you feel. These have the added benefit of a personal touch, which you just can’t convey in a big check.

5. Offer food. Anyone who’s ever worked in an office knows what a mood booster a little free food can provide. Leave a cake or a platter of sandwiches in the break room on Fridays, or have free pretzels delivered once a week.

6. Offer fun outings. Sponsor a mini golf trip on a Saturday afternoon, take your team out for ice cream, or join a local softball league. If you’re feeling really adventurous, plan a weekend team building retreat in the mountains or at the beach.

These are just a few of the simple ways you can show your employees you value their time and talents. Reach out to the staffing pros at Expert for a longer list, or contact our office and arrange a consultation.
