Your temporary position is about to begin, and you have complicated feelings. On the one hand, you’re happy to be heading into a job every day and receiving a steady paycheck. Your work history is on track and you’ll have plenty of new opportunities to meet people, make connections, and learn new skills.
On the other hand, you aren’t sure where the long term future will take you, and you’d really like this position to evolve into something more permanent. So what can you do to hit the ground running and make the most of this experience? How can you impress your employers and encourage them to keep you on board for the long term? Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.
DO start on the first minute of the first day. Temporary positions mean accelerated timelines and relationships that form with a single glance. So make each glance and conversation count. Smile. Remember the names of everyone you’re introduced to on the first day. Polish your non-verbal communication skills and start using them when you walk in the door.
DON’T just come and go each day like a ghost. Put down roots. Get to know people. Ask for feedback on your work and contributions.
DO dress like the people who work here. Even if you’re just filing or moving boxes in the stockroom, become a part of the company and dress to match the culture. Observe those around you and try to hit a tone that’s not too formal or too relaxed.
DO try to learn as much as you can about the company and its business model. Show interest and curiosity and find out what this company might need in order to reach its goals.
DO make your own goals and intentions clear to your employer. If you’d like to work here full time, say so. Ask what you’ll need to do to make this happen.
DON’T leave your employer with messes to clean up or work to redo after you’re gone. During your tenure as a temporary employee, leave every position and every workplace better then you found it.
